How Egg Donors Are Screened in New York
New York egg donors undergo thorough screening in compliance with the guidelines set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). These straightforward guidelines ensure the health and well-being of everyone involved in the egg donation process.
ASRM recommends that egg donors be between 21 and 34 years of age. They also emphasize the importance of counseling to ensure potential donors understand their role in the egg donation and family-building process.
The FDA also requires all egg donors to undergo a series of screenings, including a physical examination and infectious disease screening. ASRM also recommends genetic screening and a comprehensive medical history review.
The Donor Concierge Egg Donation Process for Intended Parents in New York
Step 1. Consultation and Intake
The first step to finding your ideal egg donor is to schedule a complimentary consultation with Donor Concierge. We’ll learn about your fertility journey so far and what your preferences are for an egg donor. If you choose to move forward with us, you will fill out our intake form, provide photographs, and make an initial payment.
Step 2. The Egg Donor Search Process
After completing the intake process, your Donor Concierge case manager will start searching our extensive database for your ideal egg donor. As they find suitable profiles, they will send them to you for review. Our case managers will handle communication with the egg donor agencies, as well as local medical clinics for physical screenings. In total, this process takes two to three weeks to complete.
Step 3. Reserving Your Egg Donor
Once Donor Concierge finds your ideal donor, we'll connect you with their agency to begin the egg donation process. There will be a lot of medical and legal coordination, which will be mostly managed by the egg donor agency. We can help you connect with a reproductive attorney so that legal documents can be drafted. Donor Concierge will be there to support you every step of the way.
Step 4. The Egg Donation Cycle
Once all documentation is taken care of, the prospective egg donor will undergo medical, genetic, and psychological screenings. After passing those, she’ll start medications to suppress her menstrual cycle and prepare her body for ovary stimulation. The egg donor will self-inject hormones to stimulate her ovaries into producing more mature eggs than in a regular cycle. This process takes 10-12 days, and the donor is closely monitored by a doctor to ensure the medications are working properly.
After the eggs have reached the desired level of maturity, the egg donor will take a “trigger” shot of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a type of hormone that signals the ovaries to release the eggs. The eggs are retrieved 36 hours later. During the surgery, the donor is placed under mild sedation while the doctor locates the mature eggs using an ultrasound wand. The eggs are then gently extracted using an aspirating needle and combined in a petri dish with sperm for fertilization. In some cases, a procedure known as an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be performed instead. This procedure involves using a tiny needle to penetrate the egg’s shell and inject sperm directly into the ovum’s center.
If undergoing a fresh egg donor cycle, the recipient’s uterus will be prepared to receive the fertilized embryo. However, many people opt for a frozen embryo transfer, in which the embryo is frozen five days after fertilization and transferred to the uterus at a later date.

Find an Egg Donor in New York
New York State is an attractive destination for intended parents from around the world who want to start a family through third-party fertility. With convenient international travel, accommodations, and attractions, New York is home to some of the world's most reputable fertility clinics. Egg donors from across the US travel to New York to participate in egg donor cycles, and the state's legal framework makes egg donation an appealing option.
New York Egg Donation FAQs
Your egg donor is not required to live in the same city as your clinic. She can undergo initial monitoring at a clinic near her and then travel to your New York clinic for her egg retrieval. This is called a travel cycle.
Some intended parents ask to meet their egg donors before or during the match. This can be a very successful arrangement for both parties. The egg donor can feel a connection to the person or people she is donating to, and the intended parents can have a sense of comfort in meeting the person giving them a precious gift. This is something we would need to know before we search for your donor so we can explain this to agencies before matching. Many donors are delighted to meet their recipients, but some are not, and it’s important to respect that decision.
You will legally be the mother or parent of your child. The donor plays a special role, but you'll be the person who raises, nurtures, and loves your child.
Our specialist mental health therapists advise starting the conversation with your child early. Children respond to honesty and age-appropriate language. You can even start a journal documenting the child’s journey to birth, including information about the egg donor and all the steps you took to welcome them to this world.
Our case managers look at grandparents' health history, when available, before presenting a candidate. This information can be useful in identifying hereditary diseases that you may not want to pass on to your child. If there are patterns of familial diseases, such as breast cancer, it may be better to work with a different donor. However, the health of the donor's immediate family (parents and siblings) is most important.
