How Egg Donors Are Screened in New York
New York egg donors are screened in accordance with Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as well as the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) requirements and guidance. These considerations are straightforward and are geared toward ensuring the health of all involved in the egg donation process.
Egg donors are recommended by ASRM to be between 21 and 34 years of age. ASRM also emphasizes the importance of counseling to ensure any egg donor candidate understands her role in the egg donation and family-building process.
The FDA also requires all egg donors to participate in and pass a series of screenings. These include a physical examination and infectious disease screening. ASRM also recommends genetic screening, counseling and full medical history.

The agency coordinator will walk you through the next steps, including coordination with your fertility clinic, contracts, and more. Your Donor Concierge case manager will also be available to provide support and offer recommendations of New York fertility clinics, specialized fertility attorneys, and more.
Step 4. The Egg Donation Cycle
After finding your top New York egg donor, you will reserve your egg donor through her egg donor agency. You’ll sign an agency agreement and the medical screening of your egg donor can begin. Your egg donor will go to your clinic for a medical evaluation and, if everything looks good, the legal contracts will be signed before any medications are administered. This will involve coordination between the egg donor agency, your clinic, and your fertility attorney to handle the legal processes involved with egg donation. Donor Concierge can connect you with an experienced fertility attorney for this step, if needed.
Once the legal contracts have been signed, the medical stimulation of your donor will begin.
To increase the number of viable eggs donated, egg donors must first take hormone injections that stimulate their ovaries into producing more mature eggs than are normally produced in a regular ovulation cycle. These injections are self-administered by the egg donor and typically take between 10 to 12 days. During this time, the egg donor is carefully monitored regularly by a fertility specialist to ensure that the medications are working properly and make any adjustments necessary.
When the eggs have reached the desired level of maturation, the egg donor will take a “trigger” shot of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is a type of hormone that signals to the ovaries to release the eggs. The eggs will then be retrieved 36 hours later. During egg retrieval, the donor is placed under mild sedation while the doctor locates the mature eggs using an ultrasound wand. The eggs are then gently extracted using an aspirating needle. The eggs are combined in a petri dish with sperm so that fertilization can occur. In some cases, a procedure known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be performed instead. This procedure involves using a tiny needle to penetrate through the egg’s shell and injecting a sperm directly into the ovum’s center.
If you are undergoing a synchronized egg donor cycle, the recipient’s uterus will be prepared to receive the fertilized embryo. However, most clinics create embryos that can be tested and frozen in preparation for a frozen embryo transfer, which is when the embryo is frozen five days after fertilization and transferred to the uterus at a later date.

Egg Donation FAQs
Your egg donor doesn’t have to live in the same city as your clinic. Your egg donor may do her initial monitoring at a clinic near her, then travel to your New York clinic for her egg retrieval. This is known as a travel cycle.
Some intended parents ask to meet their egg donors before matching, or even during the match. This can be very successful for both parties - the egg donor feels a connection to the person/people she is donating to, and the intended parents have a sense of comfort to meet the person who is giving them a precious gift. This is something we would need to know before we do the search for your donor, so that we can explain this to agencies before matching. Many donors are delighted to meet their recipients but some are not and it’s important to respect that decision.
You will be the mother or parent of your child. The donor contributed a small part of her body. You will be the person who raises your child, who nurtures and loves him/her. The donor plays a special role, but she is not your child’s mother.
Our specialist mental health therapists all advise to start the conversation with your child early - even before they are born. Children respond to honesty and age-appropriate language. You can even start a journal documenting the child’s journey to birth, including information about the egg donor, and all the things that you did to welcome them to this world.
Our Case Managers look at grandparents' health history, when available, before presenting a candidate. It is helpful in identifying hereditary diseases that you may not want to pass on to your child. If there are patterns of familial diseases, such as breast cancer, it may be better to work with a different donor. However, the health of the donor’s immediate family (parents and siblings) is most important.
