Spring is on the way, and we have good news: sunshine may be an added boost on your fertility journey.

Vitamin D plays a key role in overall health and reproductive health. Sunlight provides the body with Vitamin D naturally, and is the main source of Vitamin D for most people. So what is the connection between sunshine and fertility, and how can you get more sunlight in your life?

What is Vitamin D, and how does it affect fertility?

Vitamin D is a nutrient that the body produces when exposed to sunlight. It's also found in certain foods and supplements. Studies have shown that Vitamin D plays a critical role in reproductive health. Vitamin D deficiencies have been linked to a range of fertility issues, including irregular periods, anovulation, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and more.

Vitamin D also helps regulate our hormone levels, which is a key process for ovulation. Vitamin D supports the growth and development of healthy eggs. Additionally, Vitamin D improves our insulin sensitivity, which can be beneficial for women with conditions like PCOS.

How much sunlight do you need for optimal fertility?

Experts recommend getting at least 15-30 minutes of sunlight each day to maintain healthy Vitamin D levels. The amount of time you need in the sunshine can vary based on your skin tone, where you live, the time of year and other factors.

Please note: excessive sun exposure can increase your risk of skin cancer. It's important to wear sunscreen and take precautions including limiting your time in the sun during peak daylight hours!

Other ways to increase your Vitamin D levels

If sunlight isn’t the best option for you, don’t worry – there are other ways to increase your Vitamin D levels. Foods such as fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy products are good sources of Vitamin D. You can also take Vitamin D supplements to boost your Vitamin D levels.

Spending time in the sunshine can be a simple and effective way to give your fertility and overall health a boost. Time in the sun can also be a great way to get outside, participate in healthy and sustainable physical activity, and connect with your surroundings. All of these factors can also help regulate stress on your fertility journey, at the same time as boosting your Vitamin D levels. Remember to discuss diet or lifestyle changes with your healthcare provider, and we are wishing you the best on your fertility journey.
